Crisis in the Congo (Part 1)
27 minutes
Crisis
in the Congo (Part 1) focuses on events that take place during the
tumultuous first 30 days of the Congo's independence. Within days of
celebrating its independence on June 30, 1960, the Congo, a former Belgian
colony fabulously rich in natural resources, is faced with mutiny and
the threat of civil war. This module reveals the strategic importance
of the Congo in the Cold War struggle and shows how Dr. Bunche and the
United Nations attempted to deal with this politically charged, and
highly dangerous, crisis.
